Our Belief: People who are rebuilding their lives after periods of incarceration should have access to permanent, stable employment.
The Reality: In New York, 66% of formerly incarcerated individuals are unemployed. Of the 34% who are employed, only 14% (or 4% of the total population) earn above the minimum wage.
What We Do: The Distinguished Social Ventures Foundation helps small businesses grow so they can create full-time, entry-level positions for people who need a second chance in life. Our goal: 100+ permanent jobs by 2017.
How We Do It: We provide below market rate loans between $15,000 and $75,000, and expect that at least one permanent, full-time job will be created for every $15,000 that we lend. In addition, we also provide strategic, financial, sales, and recruiting support.
We’re always accepting applications, so if you think your business meets the criteria below, please APPLY NOW. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
We look for New York City-based businesses that have:
1. Leadership - A business with a visionary and passionate leader, who is a good team builder, and won’t sleep until the job is done.
2. Viability - An existing business (not a startup) with a clear business model and proof that customers want to buy its product or service at an economically sustainable price.
3. Job Creation Potential - A business that has an opportunity to create at least one permanent, full-time job for someone who needs a second chance in life for every $15,000 that we lend.
4. Investment Need - A business that needs a between $15,000 and $75,000 to grow, and has a plan to repay the loan.
About Us: The Distinguished Social Ventures Foundation was founded in 2012 by the Potash Family. The foundation grew out of the Distinguished Programs Group’s chairman, Andy Potash’s passion for business and his desire to create opportunities for people to reconnect with society. For the most disconnected and stigmatized – the formerly incarcerated, the homeless, and recovering addicts – permanent jobs, and ultimately economic independence, are all but impossible to secure. We believe that permanent jobs provide the best opportunities for individuals to move beyond their past and to re-build a new life for themselves and their families. For this reason, the foundation works with businesses (both for profit and not-for-profit) in New York City that have both an opportunity to grow and an interest in including our mission to create jobs for those who need a second chance in life in their long-term hiring plan.
